Berlin is the capital and the biggest city of Germany. The population is about 3.5 million and the city extends over an area of 889 sq. km.
Berlin has strongly developed scientific potential; four universities, 11 colleges or  universities of applied sciences and more than 170 public or private research-institutes. There are more than 130 000 students and around 50 000 people employed in science, research and development in Berlin. With 2.1 percent R&D personnel of the working age population Berlin holds the first place in Germany.
The most important science and technology oriented industry sectors in Berlin are biotechnology, medical engineering, ICT, traffic engineering, optics and microsystems technologies.
Berlin holds a leading position in Germany in innovation performance and technology potential creating positive climate for entrepreneurs and start ups. Highest number of newly founded start ups in Germany are in Berlin.
Major sectors of focus are heavy industry, production machinery, power transmission and railway, consumer products, aerospace and automotive.
